Manchester United advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Monday night. Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes scored the goals for the visitors, who dominated the game and created numerous chances.
Dalot broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a stunning curling shot from outside the box, after Marcus Rashford’s initial effort was blocked. The Portuguese defender scored his first goal for United since September 2018, and his first under manager Erik ten Hag.
Fernandes doubled the lead in the 74th minute from the penalty spot, after Liam Shaw fouled the United captain inside the area. The Portuguese midfielder calmly slotted the ball past Sam Tickle, who had made several saves to keep Wigan in the game.
United could have scored more, as they had 33 shots in total, with 14 on target. Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, and Alejandro Garnacho all hit the woodwork, while Tickle denied Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, and Mason Greenwood with some fine stops.
Wigan, who are third in League One, put up a spirited fight, but rarely threatened Andre Onana’s goal. Their best chance came in the third minute, when Thelo Aasgaard forced a save from the United keeper with a low shot.
The result means that United, who are eighth in the Premier League and out of Europe and the League Cup, are still in contention for the FA Cup, which they have won 12 times. They will face either Newport County or Eastleigh in the fourth round, with the replay scheduled for next week.
Ten Hag praised his team’s performance and said that the FA Cup was a priority for him. “The FA Cup is all about winning, it is knockout. You want to finish the job. That is what I said in the dressing room ‘job done,'” he told ITV. “We should have taken more (chances), but if you don’t score you have to stay focused and I think we did that tonight.”
Wigan manager Shaun Maloney admitted that his side were outclassed by United, but said that he was proud of their effort. “They were too good for us, but I can’t fault the players. They gave everything and showed great character. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we tried to play our way and create some chances,” he said.
